On the 2nd of October with 2 years on the visa I am shipping off to the Land of the long white cloud. The air time is set to be a little over 24hrs if everything goes to plan. I will be taking a short lay over in Houston, Texas before starting the second leg. On arrival in Auckland I am set to be staying with some friends for a couple weeks. I am very thankful for this as it will hopefully give me time to find my feet and sort out a few things (tax number, bank account, phone number etc.) The biggest task is to find myself a house on wheels. The plan is to buy a campervan that is fully kitted out as self contained.
My thinking is that this will both be the most affordable option long term (assuming I don’t accidentally buy a money pit) and the most fun! It should give me the freedom to explore and chase surf around the country. In order to fund the wave searching I will hopefully find some work. I’ve been told this should be pretty easy, however time will tell.
I’m open to most work, whether it be fruit picking, sheep ranch work, labouring or fishing. If I could find some work that allowed me to use my recent training in cabinetmaking that would be a plus, but I’m not too fussed. I think I will spend the first little while in the North Island as it will be Spring, then when it warms head south. This could all change though if the right job pops up. Well, that’s pretty much it, my plan in a nutshell. I am very aware that it is going to be quite the adventure, with its fair share of ups and downs. Despite all the unknowns drifting through my mind though I am psyched to get going! I figure with life being so unpredictable what’s the point in planning every little detail? And besides, you’ve got to leave a little room for the magic!
